Located in Newcastle NSW the Merewether Ocean Baths were opened in 1935 and are the largest ocean baths in the southern hemisphere.
The Baths were in much need of an upgrade, at a total cost of $4 million the improvements included enhancement of the overall appearance whilst maintaining the unique character of the facility. Access to the Baths was modernised whilst addressing safety and maintenance issues and with upgrades to the pumping and pipework systems.
PE100 pipework was chosen by Newcastle City Council due to it’s superior corrosion resistance in marine environments. Piping was made up from 400mm header pipes and 280mm outlets with non-return flap gate valves. Both electrofusion and butt welding techniques were used, due to limited access especially at high tide. Extra care was required when working around the historic and iconic pump house.
